Amanita muscaria, the mushroomiest mushroom, with its broad, red, speckled cap and its broad utility to the Smurfs, is both toxic and hallucinogenic. Shamans of northern Europe risked severe poisoning to partake in the experience contained therein. Yet some astute cultures realized, through a hair-raising process of trial and error, that reindeer break down muscaria's poisonous compounds while passing the intact hallucinogens into their urine.
