September 15 - Ostrich Forecast

A good week for the little things that make us feel human.

"Weekly Forecast" crows the iron weathercock, atop the iron cupola.

Today, in my crook of the brook, we're having our First Big Rain, the local hallmark of the shoulder of autumn. Though the equinox isn't until next week, folks are well into the transition from Summer Things to Normal Things, a time that's both relieving and stressful. Add the inward creeping of the sunrise and sunset, and you see why people crave the official sponsors of the shoulder season: baked goods, alcohol, TV, and pumpkin spice.

(The Ostrich has previously published its pro-pumpkin position. You're allowed to not like pumpkin flavor, but the bros who make fun of pumpkin spice lattes are transparently envious. "Pumpkin spice" is the "sour grapes" of the modern age.)

So it's a good week for the little things that make us feel human, and for the ultimate combination of the Good Things of Fall—watching other people bake on television. If you haven't been following, Bakey Show has a good crop of bakers this year. My betting card has Jasmine, Tom, and Jessika in the final, but I won't bet against Natalia, and I won't be surprised if Toby makes a run from the rear.
