September 29 - Ostrich Forecast

Unlucky fifth Mondays, and early notice of important days in October.

"Weekly Forecast" crows the rusty weathercock, atop the iron cupola.

We'll cover October's minor holidays next week, but you'd miss a few important ones if we skipped them today, so do spare a thought for pumpkin spice, black dogs, homemade cookies (Oct 1st), custodial workers, fried scallops (Oct 2nd), manufacturing, boyfriends (Oct 3rd), vodka, and cinnamon buns (Oct 4th).

Thursday, October 2nd is National Name Your Car Day, your chance at reparation if you're driving a nameless car, and Sunday the 5th is National Do Something Nice Day. Like your fall vaccines, an act of kindness might sting a bit, but should inoculate you broadly for another year.

Now, as you know, fifth Mondays are unlucky, though not as fiercely as, say, Friday the 13th. Fifth Mondays are the day for stapler jams, sweater snags, late deliveries, crumbled tortilla chips, and probably-harmless warning lights. Persevere as best you can, and make lemonade. (Metaphorically, yes, but also in deed. What better way to cope with a spell of bad luck than a glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade? You'll squirt yourself in the eye, for sure, but that's a fair price.)
